The way we view time is so strange. Without the structure of years, months, days or a twelve-hour clock, the passing of time seems to make no sense. We need the structure to understand life, to count the seconds and have some sort of categorical system for events and happenings. It was a bad day, it was the worst hour of her life, many things happened during his 17th year...
Sometimes we feel like in order to start over, we need to wait until the very last second of one piece of time, so that the other piece feels more fulfilled. "I'll do it tomorrow," you might say, or "I'll take out the trash after I'm done with this," someone else might call to their parents. That idea of time is even more so exemplified with the coming of a new year. The very reason why it's a chiché to go to the gym in January. Why people make resolutions. Why bother now when I can promise to do it later and have a fresh start? New Year's Eve found me next to my Dad on the couch in front of the TV, watching Columbo. I asked him how 2015 compared to other years, and what he wished to happen in 2016. He grinned and squinted, giving me a high-five. "Here's to just another year," he said. The lives we live are just conglomerates of the hours, days, and years we spend here. I think that instead of measuring time linearly, we should measure it by our full place within it in the context of infinity. What can I do with my life with however time I have left? If this were my last day, my very last second, what would I do? What kind of impact do I want to make? From a general standpoint, the price of living life is eventual death. But does that mean we should fear our end and forget to live out the pages yet to be lived, the pages we are living right now? The very fact we are alive is something amazing. It is so much what we do with it that makes every difference. New Year's Resolutions are good ways to start over, but they mean very little against the time you've missed without them. In the immortal words of Shia LaBeouf, JUST DO IT. That being said, this year, I would like to welcome you to an updated and new version of my previous blog on Bloggger. Another thing to mention: Resolutions mean absolutely nothing if you never actually stand by them. So here's to another year, friend! May you not waste a second, live to the fullest, and love to no ending.
