In the Beginning......I hated words. I hated spelling them, learning them, putting them in the correct order. It was annoying. I could get across a meaning without the sentence having to make complete sense.
But as I learned (through the brute force of various teachers over the years), having so many words and grammatical rules at your disposal is a gift! It is a power. It is a way of communicating many meanings at once, a way of expressing complex ideas in easily understandable terms. Or not so easily. It truly is the writer's choice, the writer's freedom. And once you've learn the rules of writing, you can just as quickly ignore them. When you have mastered the written word, you can do practically anything, and as such, can craft written works that defy the very things you were taught in some abstract way — and in the end, it is still art. Throughout high school, I was involved with our school's Literary Magazine, Newspaper, and AP English Programs. In 2012, I received an award for a perfect score on our state's standardized testing for English & Language Arts (MCAS).
